We believe that English is vital in the development of every young person. It is our ambition to thoroughly prepare our students to communicate effectively, and to comprehend the vast range of information that they are presented with in the wider world.
Here at Ormiston Meridian Academy, the English department strive to deliver exciting and motivating lessons to prepare students for the rigour of the GCSE course, and life beyond; we aim to challenge students’ preconceptions and doubts.
At Key Stage 3, students are given the opportunity to read a variety of literature and to respond to the content and style of texts. The literature read is drawn from a variety of genres including novels, plays, short stories and poetry. Examples of these include: Romeo and Juliet, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Of Mice and Men, Peter Pan, Private Peaceful, and a selection of poetry from other cultures.
At Key Stage 4, we aim to inspire students to love literature and become great writers as they study the AQA GCSE syllabus for English. As students continue to study a range of texts from the English literary canon, the English department endeavour to help sharpen students’ critical-thinking skills and guide them to become both perceptive readers and thoughtful, incisive speakers.
