Three fantastic groups of Year 5 students participated in a GCSE-style poetry session with Mr Walsh and Miss Melia. They studied the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae – a WW1 poem with some very complex ideas. The aim of the session was for the students to learn how to use connotations in their analysis of poetry (a skill that is transferrable to any text, and vital for GCSE students to master!).
The response was outstanding; the students contributed to some incredibly interesting discussions and all produced detailed, insightful analysis.
During the first session, students from Belgrave and Meir Heath worked wonderfully together and were a credit to their schools.
Following this, a larger group of students from Sandon were equally as hard working, producing some excellent PEE paragraphs to take away with them.
Overall, the day was a great success; the students were a delight to teach and we look forward to seeing them in the future!
