Special Educational Needs and Disability

At Ormiston Meridian Academy (OMERA) we have a dedicated Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) department. The department offers a wide variety of support to ensure that students with specific educational needs/disabilities achieve their full potential through high quality intervention and bespoke support programmes.

Our ambition statement is:

Going the extra mile to ensure all students access learning with positivity, enjoyment and confidence.  Removing barriers so that everyone’s ambitions are achieved and futures are successful’

We are committed in ensuring that all of our students leave our academy equipped with the necessary skills and qualifications needed in order to become successful and happy young adults. OMERA believes in ambition for all irrespective of disability, impairment or need and will aim to work alongside you and your young person to overcome potential barriers to learning, allowing them to participate and achieve in every aspect of school life.

At OMERA we are passionate about teaching and learning and with regular opportunities for continual professional development lead by the SEND team or external agencies, all staff are regularly kept up to date with new legislations and examples of outstanding practice. We believe this is crucial to ensure the best possible progress for all of our SEND students.

If you have concerns regarding your child/young person and their ability to access any aspects of their education, then at OMERA we are happy to discuss their difficulties so that we can decide together what the best course of action is for your child. All teachers at OMERA are teachers of SEND and share the responsibility in providing high quality teaching and support to remove any barriers to learning for your child/young person.

To support with the identification of learning needs, we use a range of testing techniques to effectively determine appropriate next steps. By working alongside yourself, your child, members of staff, pastoral leads and external agencies we are committed in ensuring that students receive the most appropriate and personalised support depending on their need. From this, we will regularly review and measure progress made and keep you updated every step of the way.

Our SEND department will:

  • offer enhanced support to students who may need additional help with their learning.
  • ensure all teachers and staff working with SEND students are kept up to date with relevant information including effective strategies to support individual students.
  • communicate with parents/carers on a regular basis.
  • regularly assess and review students individualised needs and respond to any changes needed when necessary.
  • encourage all SEND students to participate in wider academy life, including extracurricular, school trips and leadership opportunities.

Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO)

We have a passionate Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) who is responsible for looking after students special educational needs within the academy.
